Everything you need to know about the HUDAWI Cultural Centre
The HUDAWI Cultural Centre is a historic, community-focused space dedicated to preserving African and African Caribbean heritage in Huddersfield, while supporting cultural, educational and social activities for all residents.
The Centre is governed by the Hudawi Consortium — a group of experienced community leaders, professionals and volunteers who have worked tirelessly to regain community ownership of the building and lead its redevelopment.
Our vision is rooted in heritage, community unity and future-focused development. We believe that progress must honour history, and our mission reflects this through cultural preservation, community empowerment and sustainable innovation.
Yes. The Community Asset Transfer (CAT) has now been formally approved by the Council, meaning the building will be transferred for community use and managed on behalf of the local community.
We are currently putting in place the policies, systems and procedures needed to ensure the building is managed safely, effectively and for the benefit of the community.
Many operational details — such as booking processes, pricing, opening hours and facility use — are still under active development. As these are finalised, we will share clear, accessible information so that everyone knows how to access and use the building.
We are working through final handover arrangements, negotiating the lease, carrying out safety checks and making preparations. We expect to open to the public in late spring / early summer 2026. A confirmed date will be announced on our website and social media channels.
A new booking system is being set up. Once live, you will be able to:
Information on rooms, facilities, capacity and availability will be shared once finalised. Our aim is to offer flexible spaces suitable for community events, cultural activities, meetings, training, celebrations and more.
A clear pricing structure is being finalised to reflect the different types of bookings associated with use of the Centre. Our intention is to keep charges fair, transparent and supportive of community benefit.
As the redevelopment progresses, the Centre will host cultural performances, workshops, community meetings, celebrations and heritage-focused programmes. We will also invite partners to deliver activities that align with our values and community priorities.
Yes. We will be inviting local residents to volunteer in roles such as reception support, events, community outreach and maintenance, as well as other activities that help the Centre run smoothly and remain welcoming to all.
Community support is essential. You can support by volunteering, offering skills, participating in events, promoting awareness and, when appropriate, contributing to fundraising campaigns that will help sustain and develop the Centre.
Updates will be shared on our website, social media and through local community networks. As key milestones are reached, we will also share information through partners and community organisations so that as many people as possible stay informed.
Visit our Biographies page for detailed profiles of Consortium members and their contributions to the Centre and community.
Yes. The Gallery will showcase images and videos that capture important moments and highlight the Centre’s activities and history. As our systems develop, we will share clear guidance on how community members can submit material.
